ダニーデンの中心部から約 12km のオタゴ半島というところがあり、この半島の一番先っぽ周辺では、翼の長さが３ｍを超えるアルバトロス（あほうどり）の生息地あるということでも知られています。自然の宝庫であるこのオタゴ半島に、ニュージーランド唯一と言われている『ラーナック城』があります。ダニーデン市内の立派な建造物に感動したので、”エディンバラ城”に似てなくても、それでも”これぞ城”というのを密かに期待していたんですが・・・”えっ？？”といった印象です。^^;笑

どちらかというと、豪華な別荘というイメージでしょうかね。それでも、このダニーデンで一人の大富豪ウィリアム・ラーナックさんが愛する妻エリザそして6人の子供達と暮らすため、金銭を惜しむことなく建てた豪邸と聞くと、見方も変わってくるというものです。
ラーナックさんは、世界中から最高の資材を集め、ニュージーランド原産の優れた木材もふんだんに使って建てたと言われています。しかし、建造後は度重なる不幸に見まわれ、ラーナックさんは 1898 年に自殺してしまいました。現在、ラーナック城はラーナック家の手を離れ、ベーカー家の私邸となっています。
この敷地内では、見事な木彫の調度品や、煌めくクリスタルのシャンデリア、幅広い様式の庭園を見ることができます。
お城・・いや”とーっても大きな屋敷”と思って訪問してもらえれば、感動するのは間違いなしです。ラーナック城の屋上から眺めるオタゴ半島の景色は必見です！
Larnach Castle lies in the middle of Otago Peninsula, 12km away from the centre of Dunedin. You can also have the opportunity to see the royal albatross colony at Taiaroa Head. They have a wingspan of more than 3m!
You may expect the castle looks gorgeous like Edinburgh in Scotland which I did before visiting, however it probably may be right to say a sort of a big holiday house.
In 1871, William Larnach, merchant baron and local politician had 200 labourers build the castle over three years for Eliza, his first wife and mother to his six children. With the death of Eliza, two more marriages, deaths, betrayals, infidelity and eventually Larnach’s own suicide in Parliament Buildings, it’s no wonder Larnach Castle is said to be home to restless spirits.
The castle have attained a Garden of International Significance award from the New Zealand Gardens Trust. We are open 365 days a year; including Christmas Day.
