街の中心・・・オクタゴンスクウェア
ダニーデンという街は、兎に角寒い。。。初めてこの街を訪れたのが、2004年の1月元旦でのことでした。暦の上では夏です。ところが底冷えする寒さの中、ぶるぶる震えながらも必死で堪え、オクタゴン近くの日本食レストランに駆け込んで、熱燗で暖をとったことを思い出します。2回目の訪問では、4月にもかかわらず初雪でお出迎、そして3回目は雹の塊で頭をボコボコにされるという、何とも手荒い歓迎を受けました・・・(; ;)

では簡単にダニーデンのとこを説明しますと、ダニーデンは、ニュージーランド南島オタゴ地方に所在する街で人口は13万人程度。人口ではニュージーランドで5番目、南島ではクライストチャーチに次ぐ2番目の大きさを誇ります。街を歩いて気づくのは、学生数の多さ。地域人口の22%は学生で、30歳以下の若年層が45%を占める学園都市なんだとか。特にアジアからの留学生が目立つというのが印象です。
現在の町並みはイングランドの面影を残すクライストチャーチとは違って、スコットランドの面影を多く残しています。スコットランドからの移住者の末裔が現在も多く居住しスコットランド文化を継承しているせいか、通り過ぎる人々の英語には独特の訛りがあることに気づかされます。
この1848年にスコットランド自由教会からの移民たちにより開拓されゲール語でエディンバラを意味するダニーデンと名づけられたんだとか。現在でも「南のエディンバラ」と称されるくらいに、スコットランド文化を色濃く残しています。
そんなことでとても落ち着いた気分に浸れるダニーデン。ぜひ スコットランドの郷愁を感じる古都の空気を味わってみてはいかがでしょう？
I believe, the summer in Dunedin is very short. My first vist was on Jan 2004 when it was freezing just like the beginning of winter. so I spent the night at a Japanese pub near Octagon square, drinking hot sake ^^; to fuel me. Then I came back to Dunedin on Apr 2007, again it was so freezing in the early morning that it was snowing in a whole day, however I never get disappointed with this beautiful town, on Dec 2015 when a heavy hailing struck me when I checked in a hotel ^^; Please remember you have to be very careful of preparing a nice winter jacket before visiting a charming city. Briefly let me tell you about Dunedin. It is the second-largest city in the South Island of New Zealand after Christchurch, and the principal city of the Otago region. Its name comes from Dùn Èideann, the Scottish Gaelic name for Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland. The area of Dunedin lies on the central-eastern coast of Otago, surrounding the head of Otago Harbour, and the harbour and hills around Dunedin are the remnants of an extinct volcano. The city suburbs extend out into the surrounding valleys and hills, onto the isthmus of the Otago Peninsula, and along the shores of the Otago Harbour and the Pacific Ocean. Dunedin was the largest New Zealand city by territorial land area until superseded by Auckland with the formation of the Auckland Council in November 2010.
