モエラキボルダーは前回ご紹介したオアマルから車で南下すること約30分、東海岸沿いにあります。私が初めて訪れたのは1992年の12月。クイーンズタウンへ向かう長距離バスが途中休憩で立ち寄った場所でした。当時ガイドブックをもたず旅行していた私は、非常に珍しい奇岩がその土地に存在することなど全く知りもしませんでした。
なんじゃあ〜こりゃー！と、フルっい台詞を叫びながら、その神秘的で宇宙人からの産物のようなモエラキボルダーに暫し感動したのを思い出します。
この不思議な球体であるモエラキボルダーズは自然によって作られたものです。科学者の調べによると、モエラキボルダーズは約6500万年前にできた塊なんだそうです。
底の様々な堆積物が、炭酸カルシウムによって接着し、400万年をかけて少しずつ大きくなったものなのです。そのため、モエラキボルダーズは本来であれば海底にあるはずですが、長い年月を経て海底が隆起し、海岸が浸食されたことで地上に出現したと考えられています。
ニュージーランドの先住民であるマオリ族の伝説によると、この不思議な球体は、1000年ほど前にニュージーランドの沿岸で座礁した、巨大なカヌー「アライテウル号」から流れついたものだと言うことです。しかもウナギを入れるための籠として使われていた、と伝わっています。マオリ族、とてもウナギを愛してたんですね・・・ちなみに彼らはスモークして、レモンドレッシングをかけたりしながら食べるんです。所変われば食べ方も違いますねェ。
世の中で、珍しい自然現象は限りないですが、このモエラキボルダーもその一つであるのは間違いないでしょう。ご旅行のご参考までに。
Moeraki is located 30 minnutes drive to to south from Oamaru, as introduced in my previous blog. I visited here on Dec, 1992 on the way to Queenstown by a coach bus for a short-break. As I didn't know anything about this mysterious-looking boulders, maybe made by alien?!, I suspected. It was more than suprising to see them. I googled them to find out how it was created.
According to scientist, the Moeraki Boulders are created naturally about 65 million years ago. Their shape indicates that the source of calcium was mass diffusion. This is demonstrated by studies of their composition; specifically the magnesium and iron content, and stable isotopes of oxygen and carbon.
Local Māori legends explained the boulders as the remains of eel baskets, calabashes, and kumara washed ashore from the wreck of Arai-te-uru, a large sailing canoe. This legend tells of the rocky shoals that extend seaward from Shag Point as being the petrified hull of this wreck and a nearby rocky promontory as being the body of the canoe's captain. Their reticulated patterning on the boulders, according to this legend, are the remains of the canoe's fishing nets.
